![]() ![]() I reviewed poetry for Stand and Poetry Review and later for The Observer, and subsequently reviewed fiction for The Observer, The Times and The Guardian. ![]() This experience of working in many different countries and cultures has been very important to my work. I began to travel a great deal within the UK and around the world, for poetry tours and writing residences. I also completed two novels fortunately neither survives, and it was more than ten years before I wrote another novel.ĭuring this time I published several collections of poems, and wrote some of the short stories which were later collected in Love of Fat Men. I studied English at the University of York, and after graduation taught English as a foreign language in Finland.Īt around this time I began to write the poems which formed my first poetry collection, The Apple Fall, and to publish these in magazines. I began by listening to and learning by heart all kinds of rhymes and hymns and ballads, and then went on to make up my own poems, using the forms I’d heard. Poetry was very important to me from childhood. You also come to understand very early that stories hold quite different meanings for different listeners, and can be recast from many viewpoints. In a large family you hear a great many stories. My father was the eldest of twelve, and this extended family has no doubt had a strong influence on my life, as have my own children. I was born in December 1952, in Yorkshire, the second of four children. ![]()

This story, with its elements of sports, fantasy, and social consciousness that highlight tensions between the powerful and those they prey upon, successfully continues the series conceived by late basketball superstar Bryant. Winning at tennis is not just about money and fame, but resisting Silla’s plans to send more young people into brutal mines with little hope of better lives. A young tennis champion becomes the target of revenge. ![]() ![]() However, I’m going to end my review with some trigger warnings, as I have a pretty strong stomach, but even still, some things made me squeamish (even though they were used within the context of the story). Sometimes it felt almost too real to deal with. But I’m also glad that the protagonist became educated on the words and what they meant. A bond forged in Catholic school an unspoken attraction that outlasts years of separation and other relationships. It was refreshing to see a book without that.Īs a LGBTIA reader, I winced when a lot of the words that people called the protagonist were thrown out there by many characters. Most of the time, these factual errors could be corrected with a Google search. As someone with Turner Syndrome who is LGBTQIA, I’ve found that books, tv shows, and other popular media often write things and about conditions that are incorrect. Books about LGBTQIA people are so often aimed at adults and less often at teens and young adults, who also have a need to have this sort of literature.Īnyway, this book was raw and honest. ![]() About: I wandered into the YA section at my favorite indie bookstore and was very excited to find an entire display dedicated to LGBTQIA books. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A market ruled by tradition, coercion, and rules of the past is deemed to crash. All economists sought to understand one common concept: how society works. Here are three of the best lessons from the book: And traces the roots of today’s socio-economical conditions.
